# Download: Sample letters for dispute resolution

Writing letters to the school is an important part of advocating for your child. It’s especially important to put requests for [dispute resolution](https://www.understood.org/en/articles/6-options-for-resolving-an-iep-dispute) into writing. When you write a letter, you create a record of your requests and concerns. You also document what the school has or hasn’t done for your child. 

You can use these sample letters to communicate with your school and other education officials. Copy the text and then customize it. Many [state departments of education](https://www2.ed.gov/about/contacts/state/index.html) websites also have sample letters that you can use.

Keep in mind that states and local school districts may have unique rules for dispute resolution. They’re required to notify you of those rules in what’s called a [procedural safeguards](https://www.understood.org/en/articles/10-key-procedural-safeguards-in-idea) notice. It describes your rights and the process, including to whom letters should be addressed and when.
