# Video: The journey from student with dyslexia and ADHD to special education teacher

Anya was identified with dyslexia and ADHD in elementary school. Her mother — who had similar issues — was determined to make sure Anya never felt like she was less than anyone else. 

Anya’s incredibly supportive parents [read books to her](https://www.understood.org/en/articles/4-reasons-to-keep-reading-to-your-grade-schooler), taught her to [self-advocate](https://www.understood.org/en/articles/self-advocacy-sentence-starters-for-kids), and kept her focused on education through her young adult years. Now a [special education teacher](https://www.understood.org/en/articles/special-education-teachers-guide-for-parents), Anya wants to make sure the next generation has the same experience and support she had as a child.
