Laura A. Schifter, Ed.D., is an adjunct lecturer at the Harvard Graduate School of Education and a research consultant to states, districts and advocacy organizations on issues related to students with disabilities.
Schifter previously served in Washington, DC, as a senior education and disability advisor for Rep. George Miller (D-CA) on the U.S. House Committee on Education and the Workforce. Her policy experience includes work for the White House Domestic Policy Council and the U.S. Senate Health, Education, Labor and Pensions Committee. She is also a former elementary school teacher.
In 2015, Schifter coauthored How Did You Get Here? Students with Disabilities and Their Journey to Harvard, which tells the stories of several Harvard students with disabilities and their families. In addition, she is co-editor of A Policy Reader in Universal Design for Learning. Schifter earned an Ed.D. in education policy, leadership and instructional practice and an Ed.M. in mind, brain and education from Harvard Graduate School of Education. She has a B.A. in American studies from Amherst College. Schifter was diagnosed with dyslexia when she was 7.
