Dysgraphia can impact more than just your child’s handwriting. Here’s a quick overview of skills dysgraphia can affect.

This affects the ability to:
• Tie shoes, close buttons, zip zippers, do puzzles or use scissors
• Hold a pencil correctly, grip comfortably and write legibly
• Do activities that use small muscles in the fingers (like writing) without tiring too quickly
• Copy words clearly and write legibly, accurately and at an appropriate rate

Visual Processing
What it means: Being able to notice and recall similarities and differences in colors, shapes and patterns.
This affects the ability to:
• Clearly space words, letters, numbers and shapes
• Write on or between the lines
• Draw letters, numbers and shapes in appropriate proportion and size
• Read and understand maps
• Trace or copy shapes
Planning and Organization
What it means: Being able to organize thoughts and express them coherently in writing.
This affects the ability to:
• Recall key information and important details for writing
• Think of the words to write
• Use correct syntax and grammar while writing
