Signs of dyspraxia can show up in a number of ways in high school. It can cause trouble with coordination and motor skills. Here’s what you might be noticing in your teen. Keep in mind that these signs may occur with other issues, such as dysgraphia or dyslexia.

Dyspraxia: What You’re Seeing in Your High-Schooler

Teens with dyspraxia might seem clumsy or awkward. This can take a toll on them in the classroom, at home and in social situations. The following four symptoms are common among teens with dyspraxia.

Has Trouble Using His Hands
At home:
Your child has trouble using a key to open the door.
At school:
Your child finds it hard to type.
The issue:
Kids with dyspraxia may have trouble with fine motor skills—using small muscles like the ones in their hands.
Is Awkward in Conversation
At home:
Your child talks very slowly even in situations when he needs to speak fast. His speech seems “off.”
At school:
Your child talks too softly or too loudly in class.
The issue:
Kids with dyspraxia can have trouble regulating the tone, pitch and rhythm of their speech.

Avoids Team Sports
At home:
Your child shoots hoops in the driveway but doesn’t want join a basketball game with neighborhood kids.
At school:
Your child tries to avoid the action during team activities in gym class.
The issue:
Kids with dyspraxia might have difficulty with gross motor skills—coordinating big muscle movements.
Is Anxious
At home:
Your child often worries about the next school day and has difficulty sleeping as a result.
At school:
Your child senses that his peers view the way he moves as “strange” or “weird.”
The issue:
Kids with dyspraxia might feel like they can’t control their own movements. This can make them feel like they don’t t in.
