Talk to your child about famous people with learning and attention issues. Use their stories to reinforce the message that these issues don’t prevent people from being successful.
What you can say
“I know school isn’t easy for you, but this doesn’t mean you can’t be successful. Look at all the famous people who’ve overcome challenges like yours: Tim Tebow, Whoopi Goldberg, Steven Spielberg. They never gave up, and look what they’ve accomplished. You’re in good company!”
Why this will help
Your child may have trouble believing you when you say that having learning and attention issues isn’t a recipe for failure. Pointing to specific people who have overcome these challenges and gone on to achieve great things can encourage your child to keep working hard and maintain a positive attitude.
