• Flag #1: Not exploring what’s possible

  When you’re not sure what’s possible, it’s easy to say yes to the first plan the school offers. Schools sometimes skim over the details of what a 504 plan can include. They may not explain that it can provide accommodations, modifications, and services.

  Learn as much as you can about your options. You can then use that knowledge to ask for your child’s 504 plan to include specific kinds of support.

• Flag #2: Accepting a “standard” plan

  Some schools have a “standard” 504 plan for students with a certain disability. For example, they may have one plan for kids with ADHD and another plan for kids with dyslexia.

  But the needs of kids with the same disability can vary. You might get some ideas from the standard plan, but don’t accept it if it doesn’t meet your child’s individual needs. You can help the school tailor the plan. Come prepared to discuss your child’s specific struggles, along with any ideas you think might help.

• Flag #3: Not asking to update the plan

  The 504 team should review and revise your child’s 504 plan every year.

  • A yearly review isn’t required by federal law, but most schools do it anyway.

  • You can ask to be part of that annual review.

  • You can also ask to update the plan more often than that. You don’t have to wait.

  As kids move through school, they may master some skills but struggle with new ones. The academic load will also increase. You’ll want your child’s 504 plan updated to reflect what has changed, including any different accommodations or other supports.
