Your annual IEP meeting

Prepping for your IEP meeting

Learn

  • An IEP draft can be long and full of jargon. If it’s your first , seeing that thick document can feel overwhelming. You have the right to request a draft of the IEP so you can read it before the meeting.

As you read the draft, highlight or mark any section you’re not sure about. Taking notes along the way can help you walk into the meeting with your questions ready, instead of trying to figure them out on the spot.

At the meeting, it’s OK to say, “I need you to explain this part.” Ask about every section you don’t understand. You’re a member of the team, and you have the right to understand the plan before you decide whether to let the school start using the plan.

Hear from a parent

“We were talking about my child, and I could feel my throat tightening up. I’m an expert on this stuff, and I still needed to take a moment to center myself. Bring some supplies, like a water bottle in case your throat gets dry. You may also want to bring your favorite pen or some Kleenex.”
