Getting evaluated
Two ways to start an evaluation
Learn
Kids don’t get an all of a sudden. The school needs to do an evaluation and decide if your child qualifies for . Public schools have a whole process for evaluating kids using a team of professionals. And it’s free for families.
The process can start in one of two ways:
You can ask the school. This is called requesting an evaluation. You can do it any time you’re worried about how your child is doing in school.
The school can ask you. This is called a “referral.” It means the school is recommending an evaluation for your child.
Either way, the school needs your written OK before it can evaluate your child. So whoever asks first, you’re part of the decision.
