  The first step in requesting an evaluation:

  • Find out who to send the request to. Your child’s teacher should know.

  • This is also a good time to ask if the school has a community liaison or family support provider who can help you navigate the system.

  The next step:

  • Put your request in writing, in a letter or email.

  • Be sure to describe why you’re requesting an evaluation.

  • Try to be specific: “My child has a lot of trouble with spelling. He studies, but can’t remember how to spell. I’m concerned he may have a learning disability. He may need more support at school.”

• What to include, starting with the date

  Be sure to include the date you send your request. This starts the clock. The school has a set number of days to tell you if it will approve or deny your request. The response time frame might be 10 days in some states. It might be 30 days in other states. Either way, the school can’t leave you waiting forever.

  Sending your request by email is an easy way to record the date. The email shows exactly when you sent it. If you send a letter, write the date at the top.

  Other key details to include:

  • Your child’s full name

  • Your child’s student ID number, or their date of birth if you don’t have the ID

• Can the school say no to my request?

  It can be frustrating to hear “no” after you’ve asked for help. But the school has to explain its decision, and you have options.

  • The school can say no for only one reason. It must reasonably believe there’s no evidence your child has a disability.

  • It has to tell you why, in writing. This is called prior written notice and it’s required under IDEA, the federal special education law.

  • Passing grades aren’t always a reason to say no. Kids who are passing from grade to grade may still need to be evaluated.

  • A “no” doesn’t mean the school is right. You can challenge the decision.

  When you request an evaluation, you’re asking the school to fulfill a responsibility that is called "Child Find." It’s the part of IDEA that makes schools look for and evaluate any kids who may qualify for special education. Learn more about your legal rights and dispute resolution options.
