Understood.org launches Workplace Supports and Accommodations Hub on Global Accessibility Awareness Day

In April 2024, Understood.org commissioned the Neurodiversity at Work Study. It was conducted by The Harris Poll. And it had some striking results about workplace accommodations.

It found that...

  • 4 out of 5 people (85%) agree that offering accommodations for neurodivergent employees is important for equality in the workplace.

  • About the same number (83%) agree that accommodations make workplaces fairer and better for everyone.

But among people who say they’re neurodivergent or have learning and thinking differences…

  • 6 out of 10 people (60%) don’t know what accommodations they’re entitled to.

  • Almost half (49%) aren’t sure who to talk to about workplace accommodations at their company.

That’s why we created the Workplace Supports and Accommodations Hub. And it’s why we chose Global Accessibility Awareness Day as our launch date. It’s a day devoted to awareness and advocacy for accessibility and inclusion.

What’s in the hub?

The hub is for everyone who works, whether they’re looking for their first job or running the company. A manager can learn best practices for interviewing. A new hire can get ideas about what might help them do their very best at their job.

Getting the help you need can make all the difference at work. Especially for people with learning and thinking differences like ADHD and dyslexia.

“We know that people with disabilities face significant barriers in the workplace, including a lack of accommodations and support,” said Deb Wilson, Understood’s chief people and culture officer. “Our Workplace Supports and Accommodations Hub is designed to help adults with learning and thinking differences overcome these barriers and succeed in their careers.”

In the hub, you’ll find…

  • Information on the rights of employees with disabilities

  • Tips for requesting accommodations

  • Resources on how to create an inclusive workplace

  • And much more!

“We hope that our Workplace Supports and Accommodations Hub will help to make the workplace more inclusive and accessible for everyone,” said Wilson. “We believe that everyone deserves the opportunity to succeed in their career, regardless of their differences.”
