(“we” or “us”) when you visit www.understood.org (the “Site”). The Site provides information about us, our mission and any information or services we provide (together with the Site, the “Services”). This Privacy Statement also explains how we may use and disclose such information, as well as your ability to control certain uses of it. By using this site, you agree to the data collection, use, disclosure and storage practices described in this Privacy Statement.
We collect information about you in a range of forms, including personal information, when you choose to provide it to us. Personal information (or personal data) means information about an individual from which that person can be identified. It does not include personal information where the identity has been removed (anonymous personal information). This may include when you contact us with inquiries or otherwise contact us.
When you interact with us through the Services, we may collect information from you, as further described below. The Site is not intended to collect personal health information or other sensitive information about you. Please do not share your personal health or other sensitive information on the Site. We may collect such information from you directly with your consent. The information provided on our Site is also not intended to be used as legal, tax, medical or other professional advice.
Information You Provide to Us
We collect information from you when you choose to provide it to us This may include when you make a donation, request information from us, sign up for newsletters or our email lists, complete a survey, use our Services, or otherwise contact us. The information we collect may include: your name, address, email address, telephone number, mobile telephone number, geolocation information, photos or videos, username or any other information, such as ethnicity, marital status, login or password.
If you use the Services to make donations, you may provide certain payment information, such as payment card, PayPal or other financial account information, and billing address. A third-party payment processor collects and processes that information on our behalf; we do not collect or retain your payment information. We may also collect additional types of personal information that you choose to provide to us. This could include information about yourself or family members. It’s up to you whether you provide this information. We will not disclose any of this personal information unless you expressly authorize us to do so. We do not sell your information to other parties.
You also may provide information to be published or displayed (hereinafter, "posted") on public areas of the Site, or transmitted to other users of the Site or third parties (collectively, "User Contributions").
If you have created an account, you may be able to voluntarily provide additional information in various areas of the Site. For example, you may want to provide additional information as part of an optional profile to enhance your experience and use its features. We may use this information to personalize the Site and its features just for you.
If you wish to access the Site’s community features, you will be required to create a screen name. We suggest you create a screen name that does not include your name or other identifying information. If you post information in public areas, we cannot control how others may use that information. For example, a third party might copy something you post and use it on another website. Or a third party might use the information you posted to contact you. We urge you to use screen names, not real names.
The Site may also offer you the opportunity to create a full profile. Whether you provide information is your choice. We will not disclose the information you provide to us in creating your full profile. We may use it to enhance your experience on the Site and to improve the information and services available to you on and through the Site.
Your User Contributions are posted on and transmitted to others at your own risk. Although you may set certain privacy settings for such information by logging into your account profile, please be aware that no security measures are perfect or impenetrable. Additionally, we cannot control the actions of other users of the Site with whom you may choose to share your User Contributions. Therefore, we cannot and do not guarantee that your User Contributions will not be viewed by unauthorized persons.
Information Collected From Other Sources
We may obtain information about you from other sources, including social networks that you use to connect with us. If you use a third party service to login, link to us, or communicate with us (such as a social network or third party video chat), we may receive certain information about you from the third party based on your registration and privacy settings on those third party services. This information may include name, user name, demographic information, updated address or contact information, interests, and publicly-observed data, such as from social media and online activity.
Information Obtained from Third Parties
If you provide us with personal information about others, or if others give us your information, we will only use that information for the specific reason for which it was provided to us, for example, if you have agreed to share information with one of our partners, we may add this information to the information we already hold about you.
As is true of most websites, we automatically gather information about your computer such as your IP address, browser type, referring/exit pages, and operating system.
Domain Name – through which you access the Internet (for instance, AOL for America Online, or MSN for Microsoft Network, or YAHOO etc.)
IP address – from the computer or network used to access our Site
Web browser – and operating system used
Date and time – you accessed our Site
Referral Internet address – of the website from which you clicked to get to our Site
Search terms – used in a search engine (like google.com) that brought you to our Site
We may also use third-party tools or services, such as Google Analytics, to assist us with analyzing and improving the Site and Services. These service providers are not permitted to use the information collected on our behalf except to help use conduct and improve our business.

We strive to provide you with choices regarding the personal information you provide to us.
You may adjust your browser or operating system settings to limit this tracking or to decline cookies, but by doing so, you may not be able to use certain features on the Services or take full advantage of all of our offerings. We do not control third parties' collection or use of your information to serve interest-based advertising. If you do not wish to have your email address used by us to promote our own or third parties' products or services, you can opt-out by sending us an email stating your request to Info@understood.org. If we have sent you a promotional email, you may send us a return email asking to be omitted from future email distributions.
If you do not want us to use information that we collect or that you provide to us to deliver advertisements according to our advertisers' target-audience preferences, you can opt-out by sending us an email with your request to firstname.lastname@example.org. For this opt-out to function, you must have your browser set to accept all browser cookies.
Combination of Information
We may combine the information we receive from and about you, including information you provide to us and information we automatically collect through our Site, as well as information collected offline or from third party sources to help us tailor our communications to you and to improve our Services.
We may use the information we collect from and about you to:

We may contract with third parties to perform functions related to the Services (“Service Providers”). Service Providers will have access to your personal information needed to perform their business functions, but may not use or share that personal information for other purposes. California Civil Code Section §1798.83 permits users of our Site that are California residents to request certain information regarding our disclosure of Personal Information to third parties for their direct marketing purposes. Any information you may disclose in ratings or review, on message boards, in chat rooms, or on other public areas of the Services, becomes public information. Please exercise caution when disclosing personal information in these public areas.

This Privacy Statement applies only to the Services. The Services may contain links to third-party sites or applications, including social media sites, which may have privacy policies that differ from our own. The security of your personal information is important to us. We have taken certain physical, administrative, and technical steps to safeguard the information we collect from and about you. While we make every effort to help ensure the integrity and security of our network and systems, the transmission of information via the internet is not completely secure. Email sent to or from the Services may not be secure. Although we do our best to protect your personal information, we cannot guarantee the security of your personal information transmitted to our Site. Any transmission of personal information is at your own risk. We are not responsible for circumvention of any privacy settings or security measures contained on the Site.

Where we have given you (or where you have chosen) a password for access to certain parts of our Site, you are responsible for keeping this password confidential. We reserve the right to revise this Privacy Statement at any time. When we do, we will post the changes on the Site. We take your privacy very seriously. This policy describes how we use the information that you provide when using our website, Understood.org. By using Understood.org, you agree to and consent to the collection and use of your information as described below.
Information We Collect
We may collect some non-identifying information from you. This includes information that tracks the device you use to access Understood.org (but this is not information that could be used to identify you or contact you).
To access certain features of Understood.org, you may be required to set up an account and provide us with certain information about yourself such as a first name (you can use your real name or make one up) and an email address. You may also have the option to provide your zip code so, for example, we can notify you of events in your region. You will also be required to create your own password to access your account. Accounts are optional. You can use nearly all of Understood.org without having an account.
We may also, from time to time, request additional types of personal information. We might ask your child’s grade, gender, or what issues he or she is struggling with. It’s up to you whether you provide this information. We will not disclose any of this personal information unless you expressly authorize us to do so. We do not sell, lease, or share your or your child’s personal information with other parties.
If you have created an account, you may be able to voluntarily provide additional information in various areas of Understood.org. For example, you may want to provide additional information as part of an optional parent profile to enhance your experience of Understood.org and its features. In your profile, you may include information such as your child’s nickname (which must be created specifically for Understood.org and should not identify your child to us or others), your child’s grade, and the issue(s) your child is struggling with. We may use this information to personalize Understood.org and its features just for you.
If you wish to access the Understood.org community features, you will be required to create a screen name. We suggest you create a screen name that does not include your name or other identifying information. If you post information in public areas, we cannot control how others may use that information. For example, a third party might copy something you post and use it on another website. Or a third party might use the information you posted to contact you. We urge you to use screen names, not real names.
Understood.org may also offer you the opportunity to create a full profile. If you decide to create this full profile, we will ask you to identify your child’s specific issue(s)/diagnosis. We’ll ask whether your child has an IEP or a 504 plan. Whether you provide this information is your choice. You may also provide information about your own interests as a parent with respect to information and support available on Understood.org. We will not disclose the information you provide to us in creating your full profile. We may use it to enhance your experience on Understood.org and to improve the information and services available to you on and through Understood.org.
We may also collect your information if you sign up for newsletters or for customized information that we may deliver via emails, if you participate in any surveys we offer as part of our services on Understood.org, or if you post information in a public area (for example you post a question in a public portion of Understood.org).
Understood.org is a U.S.-based site and currently does not market to or offer services to individuals in the European Union (EU).
If you are located or reside within the EU, please do not sign up for emails, create an account, or provide Understood.org with any personal information.
In the future, we hope to offer services in the EU. We are working on a plan to comply with the EU’s data privacy laws, including GDPR.
Understood.org is designed for and intended for use by parents (or guardians) of children who have known or suspected learning and attention issues. It is not designed for or intended for use by children.
We do not knowingly collect personal information from children under age 13. In fact, we do not offer Understood.org to anyone under age 13. If you are under 13, please do not create an account, use Understood.org, or provide Understood.org with any personal information.
Below you’ll find FAQs that describe our most common uses of cookies, which are an inherent part of our production process and enable us to better serve you.
What’s a cookie?
A cookie is a small file that is sent to your computer by a site’s server. A cookie can be a record of your visit to a site, including information such as your screen name, registration information, time of last visit, pages viewed, etc. A cookie created by one site’s servers can be retrieved only by that site’s servers. Thus, information gathered in cookies through Understood.org is not accessible to other sites.
What if I don’t accept cookies?
If you set your browser to “not accept” any cookies, you will not be able to take full advantage of certain future features that Understood.org may offer to enhance individual user experiences. We also do not suggest that you navigate our site with your browser’s “cookie alert” feature enabled. While you certainly could set your browser to alert you each time a cookie is passed to your machine, you most likely will find the experience of having to respond to frequent cookie alerts quite frustrating. We suggest that you turn the “cookie alert” feature off, or perhaps use the site for a short time with it on, once you’ve seen firsthand how we use the technology and become more familiarized and comfortable with it.
So what’s in it for me?
You’ll get faster, more convenient access. We won’t have to ask you to identify yourself with each new page requested. We can also deliver customized information to you and store your settings more efficiently. And you’ll get better information. We want to give you the features and materials you’re interested in.
Will the cookies you send me go away?
Some of our cookies are long term. If they weren’t, we’d need to ask you for certain information, such as your screen name, with each new session. Other cookies do expire after a short period of time. A cookie, such as those required to retain settings you elect (screen name, password, personalization preferences, etc.) will continue to reside on your hard drive for subsequent use by your browser. Remember, cookies are small files and don’t take up significant disk-space on your computer. You are, of course, free to clear any and all cookies from your hard drive any time you wish. Simply search your system for any files named cookie*.* (or similar) and delete these at your discretion. Remember, however, that deleting these cookies means any long-term settings (such as your stored screen name and password) will need to be reset. To remove the cookies issued by Understood.org—or any other cookies, for that matter—you may use certain software/shareware utilities (many of which are free). Once again, there are also a number of software and shareware programs available which are designed to periodically purge cookie files from your hard disk. When you provide information, we typically use it to customize your experience and to provide you access to Understood.org and services. We can offer free additional materials or services that may be of particular interest to you. And we can improve the design and performance of Understood.org.
We may use the information you provide to send you notices that contain information about events, content, materials and services provided by Understood and other third-party organizations. When we do this, we do not disclose your information to these third-party organizations. Unless you consent, we will not use the information provided by you in a way that is incompatible with the purposes for which it was originally collected or subsequently authorized by you. We will never try to sell you anything.
Understood.org is a free resource for parents created in collaboration with 15 founding nonprofit organizations. One of the nonprofit organizations helping provide Understood.org and you with information on Understood.org is the National Center for Learning Disabilities, which operates and manages Understood.org in collaboration with the other 14 founding nonprofit organizations. Understood.org is not affiliated with any pharmaceutical company.

Opting Out of Communications From Understood
By providing your email address while signing up for Understood.org, you automatically grant permission to Understood.org to send communications to you, unless you opt out at that time. You may also manage your preferences and opt out of receiving email communications by clicking “unsubscribe” from an email sent to you by Understood.org or by signing into Understood online and managing your preferences.

Opting to Disclose Your Information to Others
If you choose to participate in other features of Understood.org that allow you to interact directly with medical, health, education, and legal consultants or other Understood.org users, you may choose to provide certain identifiable or even sensitive information to those consultants or other users. Unless you consent, we will not use the information provided by you in a way that is incompatible with the purposes for which it was originally collected or subsequently authorized by you.
Opting to Disclose Your Information in Public Areas
If you mistakenly post information in a public area of Understood.org and would like to remove it, you can send an email to PrivacyOfficer@Understood.Org. We will try to remove it, although in some cases we may not be able to.
Please keep in mind that any information you disclose in public areas of Understood.org may become widespread. You should exercise caution when deciding the type and amount of information you want to disclose.
Accessing Third-Party Sites from Understood.org
Understood.org may provide links to websites of other organizations or companies that may offer materials and services as well as links to other sites.
In using Understood.org or the linked sites of other organizations or companies, you may have the option to sign up for email lists operated by these organizations or companies. If you choose to request that your address be removed from the organizations’ or companies’ lists, we cannot control whether or not they will immediately stop using your address. To stop receiving communications from these organizations or companies, you should contact them directly.
When you directly submit information to third parties, their privacy policies, not ours, will govern their use of the information and data. You should review their privacy policies and terms of service. We do not make any representations regarding the policies or practices of these third parties.

Community Member Guidelines
Understood.org and its social media accounts exist to connect families to resources and experts in the fields of learning and thinking differences. We welcome anyone willing to join us in this pursuit.
You are encouraged to view as many of Understood’s articles, slideshows, infographics, and videos as you wish. Feel free to share what you learn with others both online and offline.
We invite you to participate in the community on Understood.org, and on any other social media. We’re building an online community centered around families with children who have learning and thinking differences.We reserve the right to remove content containing obscenity, language that could make families uncomfortable, or the excessive use of profanity. Please be aware, when participating, that we will remove: Content that does not directly relate to larger discussions in a meaningful way; Racist, sexist, homophobic, or religiously intolerant content; Disrespectful, distasteful, unconstructive, or illegal content; Content promoting pseudoscience, conspiracy theories, zealotry, proselytizing, self-promotion, product-hawking, or research project inquiries; Content posted by members using inappropriate profile names or profile images
To join the community on Understood, you’ll need to create a profile. Anyone 13 and over can join Understood by providing basic contact information (first name, email address, country of residence). Once registered, please feel free to set up a profile and join the community by commenting on existing posts or creating your own.
If you’re under age 13, you may not create an individual Understood account, and therefore you cannot actively participate in the Understood community. You’re welcome to view Understood and enjoy the site, though.
If you act disrespectfully, disruptively, or illegally in the community on Understood or on our social media channels, we reserve the right to block you or terminate your membership, at any time, and without prior warning.
Understood experts are committed to providing families with expert advice that’s free of charge and never influenced by commercial interests. However, all communication between families and experts should only take place within the Understood Community, not through personal email.
Please note that screen names are generated by individual users and may contain titles (such as Dr. or Ph.D.) that are not vetted by the Understood team.

Have you come across a topic you find inappropriate? Understood is keeping an eye out for inappropriate topics but can use your help to flag troublesome content. If you see a topic that concerns you:
Please click the Flag button on the comment to send us an alert. No comments will be removed or hidden automatically, but the Understoodteam will be alerted to review it as soon as possible.
Other members will not be able to see that you’ve flagged a comment.
Please don’t overuse the Flag button, or flag a comment simply because you disagree with the author.
Screen names are generated by individual users and may contain titles (such as Dr. or PhD) that are not vetted by the Understood team.
How to Avoid Having Your Post Removed
No one likes having their contributions removed, but sometimes we have to do that to keep the community pleasant, useful, and safe for everyone. We ask all our community members to refrain from posting:
Abuse: Understood is not the place for bullying, name-calling, hateful feedback, threats, harassment, intolerance, or virtual violence.
Crass commercialism: Understood is not the right place for selling or promoting your product or service. It’s also not the right place for soliciting traffic to your website or looking for research project participation.
Spam: Any spam messages will be deleted.
Inappropriate: Whether it’s unrelated content or it’s derailing a conversation, topics posted that are not appropriate will be removed.
Inappropriate language: Understood is not the right place for inappropriate text-speak, foul language, obscenity, or combative posturing.
Inappropriate images: Explicit or inappropriate profile images will result in your account being deleted.
Privacy concern: If your comment divulges private information (including telephone numbers, mailing addresses, or ways to make in-person contact) about you or another person, it will be deleted. Please don’t post identifying information such as the name of your child’s school or teacher
Response to an inappropriate comment: Please use the Flag button instead of replying.
Terms and Conditions violation: We will remove any topic that violates Understood’s Terms and Conditions.
Other: Understood is not the right platform for pseudoscience, zealotry, personal requests, proselytizing, or self-promotion.
If the Understood staff removes your topic, please consider working with us to revise your content until it is appropriate for the community. Please don’t harass or threaten the staff; doing so will risk removal of your account.
