The Every Student Succeeds Act (ESSA) is the nation’s new education law. It replaced No Child Left Behind.
ESSA was signed into law in 2015, but it will go into effect in the 2017–2018 school year. It covers all kids in public school in the United States, including the 1 in 5 with learning and attention issues. But its impact may be greater for the 6 million students who receive special education services.
Under ESSA, your state has more of a say in how it will account for student achievement. And you get more of a say in how that happens. It’s an opportunity to make sure your state is held as accountable for students with disabilities as it is for other students.
This toolkit, created in partnership with the National Center for Learning Disabilities (NCLD), can help you become an ESSA advocate. Now’s the time to let your state and district education officials know that you want your child to be counted!
