Our Mission

Understood.org is a national nonprofit shaping the world for difference.

We support the 70 million people in the United States who have learning and thinking differences like dyslexia and ADHD.

We focus on providing expert-vetted tools and information, driving behavior change, and building a world where all minds can thrive.

Our vision

Our goal is to put 100 million people on the path to thriving by 2030. For more than 10 years, we’ve been creating with accessibility in mind. With vital input from neurodivergent people, we’re building a future where all minds can thrive. We’re working toward a world where systems are designed not just to accommodate difference, but to celebrate it.

Our approach

Understood created a framework called SPARC to help us measure our impact. It looks at how people are meeting daily challenges and if they’re living fulfilling lives. When someone improves in any area, it puts them on the path to thriving. And when people are struggling, we offer practical guidance on what to do next.

SPARC

  • Self-concept: This is a person’s view of themselves based on personal beliefs and responses from others. A sense of accomplishment and pride often feeds into the development of a positive self-concept.

  • Purpose and meaning: Purpose gives a person intention and aim. A sense of meaning is feeling connected to something beyond the self.

  • Autonomy: This is having the freedom to make choices and act in ways that reflect personal values and interests. It’s strongly related to self-determination.

  • Relationships: A person’s relationships create a sense of belonging through connections with other people or with a whole community.

  • Capacity: This is the capability to achieve, do something well, or be proficient at a task. It can be cultivated.
