Star words are the most common words found in early reading materials. They make up at least half of the text. As each school year progresses, students are expected to recognize a growing number of star words by sight. Check out these sample lists to see the types of sight words your child is expected to know.

As grade-schoolers learn to read, each year they’re expected to learn to recognize dozens of words by sight. Some reading programs refer to sight words as star words. Here are some typical star words for kindergarten through third grade.
