Checklist: Questions to Ask About the School’s Reading Instruction

By Elizabeth Babbin

If your child is struggling to learn to read, it’s helpful to learn as much as you can about the approach your school is using. There are different methods of teaching reading. Struggling readers often improve if they can learn a different way. Understanding how your child is being taught to read will help you support those efforts at home. Or you can ask for a different method.

Here are some important questions to ask your school. Educators often use terms the average parent isn’t familiar with. Don’t be shy! Keep asking until you understand exactly what’s happening in your child’s reading program.

How do you structure your reading curriculum?
How do you identify students who are struggling to read?
What resources do you have available for struggling readers?
How effective is the reading instruction?

There’s no one way to teach reading. But knowing more about your school’s reading instruction can help your child become a successful reader.
