Thomas E. Brown was a leading voice in ADHD research and a celebrated member of Understood’s Expert Network. Brown, who served as Understood’s consulting psychologist, was a pioneering clinical psychologist whose work helped reshape the way the world understands ADHD. It is impossible to overstate his immense contribution to the field.

In one of Understood’s most loved videos, he explained the science behind ADHD, including how it’s diagnosed and the treatment options. His clarity, compassion, and commitment to supporting individuals with ADHD has made a lasting impact. 

For 20 years, he was associate director of the Yale Clinic for Attention and Related Disorders in the department of psychiatry at Yale School of Medicine. He then was a clinical professor of psychiatry and neuroscience at the University of California Riverside School of Medicine. At the Brown Clinic for Attention and Related Disorders, he assessed and treated children, teens, and adults.

His seven books on ADHD include Smart but Stuck; Outside the Box; and ADHD and Asperger Syndrome in Smart Kids and Adults. He edited ADHD Comorbidities: Handbook for ADHD Complications in Children and Adults. 

He authored the revised Brown Executive Function/Attention Rating Scales and 30 scientific articles, and was an elected fellow of the Society of Clinical Child and Adolescent Psychology. He earned his PhD in clinical psychology at Yale University.
